Description
Sulfamethoxazole / Trimethoprim — a synergistic two-drug combination antibiotic delivering broad-spectrum coverage against resistant gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections in ornamental fish.
Why SMZ-TMP works better than a single antibiotic: Unlike every other antibiotic in our lineup, SMZ-TMP contains two active ingredients that attack bacteria at two different points in their metabolic pathway simultaneously. Sulfamethoxazole blocks folate synthesis, and Trimethoprim blocks the next step in the same pathway — making it extremely difficult for bacteria to develop resistance. This synergistic dual-drug formula produces a bactericidal effect far greater than either drug alone and is particularly effective against infections that have proven resistant to single-agent antibiotics. Also commonly known as Bactrim.
How the Two Ingredients Work Together
- Sulfamethoxazole 800mg - Inhibits dihydropteroate synthase — the first enzyme in bacterial folate synthesis. Without folate, bacteria cannot produce the DNA building blocks needed to reproduce.
- Trimethoprim 160mg - Inhibits dihydrofolate reductase — the second enzyme in the same pathway. Blocking both steps simultaneously creates a powerful one-two punch that is bactericidal at much lower concentrations.
About This Product
Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP) is a synthetic combination antibiotic that pairs two drugs from different antibiotic classes into one highly effective tablet. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic and Trimethoprim is a diaminopyrimidine — each targets a separate enzyme in the bacterial folate synthesis pathway, creating a sequential double-block that is far more bactericidal than either drug used alone.
Each tablet contains USP-grade Sulfamethoxazole 800mg and Trimethoprim 160mg in a 100-tablet count. The standard 5:1 ratio of sulfa to trimethoprim is the clinically proven optimal synergistic dose. This makes SMZ-TMP an excellent choice for treating a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative infections — particularly when single-agent antibiotics have not produced results — and it is among the most versatile antibiotics in ornamental fishkeeping.

- Bacterial hemorrhagic septicemia
- Gill disease
- Open wounds & body ulcers
- Infections resistant to single-agent antibiotics
Directions for Use
- Determine your dose: Use one 800mg/160mg tablet per 40 gallons of aquarium water.
- Dissolve the tablet in a small amount of aquarium water before adding to the tank. Stir until fully dissolved.
- Add directly to your aquarium, pond, or hospital/quarantine tank.
- Repeat every 24 hours for 5–10 days. Do not exceed 10 days of continuous treatment.
- Perform a 25% water change each day before re-dosing to maintain water quality and reduce antibiotic buildup.
