Description
Semisynthetic second-generation tetracycline — the preferred tetracycline-class antibiotic for saltwater, marine, and hard water aquariums where standard doxycycline may lose potency.
Why choose Minocycline over Doxycycline? Minocycline is a second-generation tetracycline with one critical advantage over doxycycline and standard tetracycline: it does not bind to calcium, magnesium, or other minerals found in hard water and saltwater tanks. This means it remains fully active and effective in marine, reef-adjacent, and hard water freshwater aquariums where other tetracyclines are rapidly inactivated. If you have a saltwater tank or naturally hard tap water, Minocycline is the correct tetracycline-class antibiotic to choose. Also commonly known as fish min.
Minocycline vs. Doxycycline — Which Should I Choose?
Minocycline (this product)
- Second-generation tetracycline
- Stable in saltwater & hard water
- Does not bind to calcium/magnesium
- Best for marine & reef-adjacent tanks
- 100mg / 1 capsule per 20 gallons
- 30-count
Doxycycline (also available)
- First-generation tetracycline class
- Better suited for freshwater tanks
- Can degrade in hard/salt water
- Excellent for tail rot, gill disease
- 100mg / 1 capsule or tablet per 10 gallons
About This Product
Minocycline HCl is a semisynthetic, second-generation tetracycline-class antibiotic effective against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial microorganisms. Like all tetracyclines, it works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis — but its unique chemical structure gives it significantly better stability in high-mineral and saltwater environments compared to first-generation tetracyclines and doxycycline.
Each capsule contains USP-grade Minocycline HCl 100mg in a 30-capsule count. It is the tetracycline-class antibiotic of choice for saltwater aquariums, marine tanks, and freshwater tanks with naturally hard tap water — environments where standard tetracycline and even doxycycline are quickly neutralized by calcium and magnesium ions before they can reach therapeutic concentrations.
Also commonly searched as: fish minocycline, minocycline for fish, fish min equivalent, saltwater fish antibiotic tetracycline, marine fish antibiotic, fish minocycline 100mg, hard water aquarium antibiotic.
Commonly Treats
- Tail rot & fin rot
- Gill disease & gill infections
- Columnaris (mouth rot)
- Bacterial hemorrhagic septicemia
- Slow-healing wounds & ulcers
- Dropsy
- Internal & systemic bacterial infections
- Bacterial infections in saltwater & hard water tanks
Directions for Use

- Dissolve the capsule in a small amount of aquarium water before adding to the tank. Stir until fully dissolved.
- Add directly to your aquarium, pond, or hospital/quarantine tank.
- Repeat every 24 hours for 5–10 days. Do not exceed 10 days of continuous treatment.
- Perform a 25% water change each day before re-dosing to maintain water quality and reduce antibiotic buildup.
