Crowded chickens get stressed, peck each other and get sick more often. These are the common starting numbers for standard-size birds; bantams need a little less.
- Inside the coop: about 4 square feet per bird.
- In the run: about 10 square feet per bird. More is always better.
- Roost bar: about 8 to 10 inches per bird, higher than the nest boxes.
- Nest boxes: one for every four or five hens.
- Feeders and waterers: enough that the lowest hen in the pecking order can still get to them. Add a second station as the flock grows.
Ventilation matters as much as space
Chickens put out a lot of moisture and ammonia. Vents high on the walls let it escape without a draft at roost level — especially important in humid North Carolina summers.
Plan for more birds
Almost everyone ends up wanting more chickens. If you're building or buying a coop, size it for a few more than you have.
